Carbon steel pipeline heaters use 40% triethylene glycol (TEG) in the temperature range 220 to 400ºF to prevent freezing of arctic crude oil pipelines. Specified pH range of the TEG is 8-10 but recent KOH additions produced pH from 12 to 14 in some of the heaters. This laboratory study evaluated whether the high pH values can induce caustic stress corrosion cracking in the carbon steel line heaters. The study used slow strain rate tests autoclave tests electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization and an XPS study of surface films to determine that carbon steel is at no practical risk of SCC in high-pH TEG under the conditions tested.
