The technical challenges of CO2 sequestration wells are highly dependent on the individual well design parameters including the formation being injected into and the impurities in the CO2 source gas. These factors impact the potential corrosion and other material degradation challenges threatening the well components including injection tubing injection casing cement and packer materials. The long term integrity of these components is critical to the injection phase of the well lifecycle and the long-term suspension and abandonment phases. Key to the acceptance of CO2 sequestration as a safe and reliable greenhouse gas control mechanism is the confidence that the well is truly leak-free. In fact many wells suffer from some level of sustained annulus pressure indicative of a leak. Integrity management element requires a comprehensive monitoring and pro-active warning system. Well parameters requiring monitoring and testing have to be developed from industry international standards and regulations. Continuous condition monitoring must integrate relevant data from multiple sources and analyse it continuously so as to identify any well integrity problems and to alert the operators before conditions become critical. Such systems are deployed in production and in gas storage situations and can be customized to CO2 sequestration wells.
