The environmental cracking resistance of nickel steels ASTM A353 A553 (9% Ni) and ASTM A203 Gr. E (3-1/2% Ni) was studied using laboratory slow strain rate and constant load tests. Potential cracking mechanisms tested were mercury liquid metal embrittlement (Hg LME) hydrogen embrittlement and methanol stress-corrosion cracking (MeOH SCC). No susceptibility to MeOH SCC was observed in these tests. Cathodic charging with hydrogen strongly embrittled 9% Ni steel. ASTM A353 9% Ni steel showed significant susceptibility to Hg LME. Quenched and double-tempered ASTM A553 9% Ni steel displayed much less Hg LME susceptibiliy than the A353 plate. ASTM A203 Gr. E 3-1/2% Ni steel resisted Hg LME and MeOH SCC in these tests.
