Recently the application of glass flake vinylester lining is increasing especially for internal surfaces of vessels and tanks used for severe corrosive services in process plants because of its long-term outstanding corrosion resistance and excellent constructability. However once the lining is damaged the base metal will corrode rapidly in severe corrosive services which leads to serious trouble and costly repairs. It is generally recognized that proper lining application is critical to achieving long-term lining performance with no premature cracking or delamination. However many problems are also the result of an insufficient understanding of the nature of glass flake lining. This paper describes several cases of lining failure which were due to insufficient understanding of glass flake lining characteristics such as its low ductility and differences in anti-blistering properties. Some measures to prevent lining failure are proposed.
