Elimination of Corrosion and Stress Corrosion Cracking Risks in Stainless Steel Digester by Anodic Protection SystemMartti Pulliainen Savcor Forest OyFlavio Paoliello Celulose Nipo-Brasileira S.A. - CENIBRACorrosion and SCC was reported in 316L material in Kraft digester cooking with the process model A. The mill was planning to change cooking process to more developed model B that estimated to be still more corrosive than earlier model A. An in-line corrosion monitoring system was installed in different zones of the digester to evaluate changes in corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) risks when running model A or model B process. Simultaneously with corrosion monitoring the Contact Electric Resistance (CER) method was used in liquor loops to determine the polarization potential ranges that give a good and stable passivation for 316L stainless steel without corrosion and SCC risks in various zones of the digester. These results were used when planning Anodic Protection System (APS) in this environment. APS was installed in the digester 2007. Protection has been very successful with the added benefit of reduced scaling in the lower digester.
