51317--9646-Electrochemical Study of the Influence of Acetic Acid on Carbon Steel Corrosion in Sour Environment

An investigation into the effect of ppm concentrations of acetic acid on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of API 5L X65 carbon steel in a sour environment. Electrochemical techniques, Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR), Potentiodynamic Polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), were used.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of acetic acid on the mechanistic corrosion behavior of carbon steel in sour gas environments using multiple electrochemical techniques. The investigation is conducted at a constant temperature and H2S concentration in 3.5%NaCl solution and 1.0 bar CO2 pressure. The concentration range of acetic acid is from 0-1000 ppm at a solution pH of 3.0 to 6.0. The effects of acetic acid on the time variation of uniform corrosion rate localized corrosion behavior (pitting corrosion) and the detailed electrochemical behavior of the corrosion product will be presented. Keywords:

Keywords: Carbon steel, X65, acetic acid, electrochemical corrosion, hydrogen sulfide, LPR, EIS
