ABSTRACTAs a hydrate inhibitor Mono ethylene glycol (MEG) is one common preference to prevent formation of solid gas-hydrates in wet natural gas pipelines. But in aspect of corrosion reaction how does it affect the corrosion process: corrosion inhibitor or promoter? The goal of this work was to investigate the corrosion inhibition performances of MEG in stimulant solutions containing CO2. The electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization curves electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were used to determine the corrosion kinetics of X70 steel and weight-loss method to examine the corrosion rates at different MEG concentrations under static conditions. The morphology of the iron scale layer was later analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Focused on the complex filed environment only MEG was not enough to meet the protection need of various conditions. It was necessary to take other actions in synergy with MEG. So we studied the combination effect of MEG and a generic imidazoline based inhibitor/pH stabilization by electrochemical measurement which demonstrated a more excellent protection against CO2 corrosion.Keywords: mono ethylene glycol corrosion inhibition performances synergistic effect
