Many telecommunication plants have been protected against long-term exposure in the natural environment by using a corrosion prevention technology such as the anti-crevice corrosion technique and polymeric coating film combined with a galvanization technique. As regards the latter approach we have developed a thermoplastic polyester powder coating that has been used for steel telephone poles in the field throughout Japan. These steel poles are used in various outdoor environments namely in high ultra-violet light in a wide range of temperatures and in alkaline environments. In particular when they are close to mortar and concrete we cannot ignore the effect of alkalinity. So we tried to provide the conventional thermoplastic polyester powder coating with high alkaline resistance. That is we added a highly alkaline powder resin to protect the film in an alkaline environment. We performed a structural analysis of the newly formed film and investigated its performance in alkaline resistance testing by immersing test pieces in NaOH aqua solution at 40OC. An improvement in alkaline resistance is confirmed and the chemical and physical characteristics are also discussed.
