Distribution of Corrosion Attacks in Sour Pipelines – A Parametric Study

In pipeline corrosion management practice, one challenge is how to locate the most corrosive area along the right-of-way of an existing pipeline. Pipeline networks are complex systems containing different grades of multiphase crude oil coming from dissimilar reservoirs, which results in fluids having dissimilar chemical and physical properties along each network. The fluid starts flowing into a pipeline at a certain pressure, temperature, and associated velocity.

A study of different sour crude flowlines revealed that severe corrosion attacks are concentrated near the inlet part of the pipelines. This observation suggests a transition zone beyond which corrosion attacks are significantly accumulated. In this study, a clustering algorithm is used to identify a transition zone for pipelines as a function of several parameters which were selected from the literature as most critical. A comparison with ground truth data will validate the extent of which the transition zone is a function of the selected critical parameters. Present findings would be insightful for improved risk control and integrity management of pipelines.
