Developing a Standardized Process for Cathodic Protection Current Measurement on in-service Pipelines – Process and Procedures for a New Technology David WilliamsNACE Cathodic Protection SpecialistBaker Hughes9357 S College CtTulsa OK 74137AbstractCathodic protection current measurement (CPCM) using an in-line inspection (ILI) tool is a new inspection technique that provides real time cathodic protection current flow data to help determine the effectiveness of a pipeline cathodic protection system. This ILI technique compliments all existing Direct Assessment (DA) inspections and cathodic protection survey techniques and provides a new data set that has not been available prior to development of the tool. The technique helps operators identify areas where the cathodic protection system is not functioning properly and where active corrosion may be present. The paper will discuss the process and methodology that will allow operators to understand tool limitations and strengths and provide a process that will allow more accurate interpretation of the data collected by the CPCM tool. The goal of this paper is to provide a basis for an engineering standard for interpreting evaluating and responding to the CPCM information by following a formal engineering process. The current NACE DA Process is very robust and very successful and is an excellent example of the methodology and process required for successful performance. This paper will provide proposed methodology and process development that will be the basis for a standardized procedure. In addition the paper will propose cathodic protection current measurement as a complimentary tool for the DA Process.
