Degradation Of Structural Components After Exposure In Biomass Pyrolysis System

Successful commercialization of any biomass liquefaction technology will require identification of strutural materials with sufficient corrosion resistance to contain the process fluids for an extended period of time. The conditions under which materials will be utilized will strongly affect the selection of containment materials. For production and processing of bio-oils the materials will be required to perform at temperatures that could be as high as 550 C and for some processes under considerable pressure.Examination of components after extended exposure in operating systems has shown shallow intergranular attack of some stainless steel samples. These studies have identified sulfur as a factor in the degradation and also identified materials that appear to have improved resistance to this intergranular attack.Research sponsored by the Department of Energy's Bioenergy Technologies Office
