Metallic bellows are applied to regenerated catalyst standpipe spent catalyst standpipe and flue gas piping in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units to absorb movement. Nickel-based alloy and nickel-iron-chromium alloy such as Alloy 625LCF (N06626) Alloy 625 (N06625) and Alloy 800H (N08800) are selected for the metallic bellows in FCC units.

Metal skin temperature of the bellows is controlled by several layers of refractory to avoid reduction of strength at high temperature and acid dew point corrosion at low temperature.

However several cracks occurred in metallic bellows in FCC units after operating for only a short time because the design of the refractory layers was not sufficient for the recently huge FCC units.

This paper presents the investigation into a recent case of cracking of the bellows in an FCC unit after which this paper also offers several recommendations to reduce the risk of cracking.
