Correlating of Online Corrosion Monitoring (OCM) with in Line Inspection Data for Export Crude Pipeline - Case Study

Pipelines are one of the essential elements in the upstream oil and gas operation network. Transportation of the produced products to the end client is ensured through maintaining the pipeline integrity. Internal corrosion is one of the major problems that could directly affect pipeline integrity and, in severe cases, lead to failure. Different internal corrosion monitoring techniques are available to assess and evaluate fluid corrosivity and monitor it. Online Corrosion Monitoring (OCM) that uses corrosion coupons are widely utilized to measure the corrosion and pitting rate, in addition to fluid and bacteria analysis for fluid sample collected from cleaning pigging processes that qualitatively and quantitatively reflect the fluid corrosivity. Inline inspection (ILI) is a very sophisticated non-destructive inspection technique conducted for identifying pitting corrosion, erosion, cracks, and other types of pipeline defects. This paper presents a case study on correlates the Online Corrosion Monitoring (OCM) data, Wet chemistry analysis of the fluid, cleaning pigging samples, operational Data along with Inline inspection (ILI) data for one of the main and critical North Kuwait crude export pipeline. The paper's outcome could be utilized for implementing a good corrosion mitigation plan and prioritizing and following up on the action plans of the Crude pipelines.
