During the inaugural” Women in Coatings” session held at The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) GreenCoat 2011 a survey was developed and distributed to conference participants to determine the present state of the role of women in the coatings industry. This paper and presentation at GreenCoat 2012 summarize the data obtained from the survey responses.

Solid particles entrained in fluids can impact pipelines and equipment causing wear and material removal. Particle impact velocities that are affected by the carrier fluids have the largest effect on the magnitude and distribution of solid particle erosion rates in addition to the mass of impacting particles or the particle rates. In addition to the interaction of particles with the carrier fluids, particles interaction with solid materials makes this process highly complex and produces effects that are interesting and yet important to predict for practical engineering applications.
This “Work Force Development Initiatives” presentation will detail 2 initiatives that are being undertaken by both the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) and the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) on Work Force Development for 2019-2020.
Work zones pose a hazard for the traveling public and workers. Through proper planning, training and the use safety equipment, the hazards can be minimized or prevented.
Understanding the key components of any project is critical if one is to ensure a successful outcome rather than a project that is riddled with needless delays, misunderstandings, and costly rework charges. An effective Scope of Work (SOW) is often the sole document that is relevant in preventing issues that can wreak havoc on a typical project.
This paper will discuss a hands-on workshop, interactive session to train participants to write effective corrective actions as they relate to typical problems for an industrial coating contractor. This workshop should be particularly helpful to coating contractors who are QP certified by SSPC. QP1, QP3, and QS1 certified contractors are required to document corrective actions.
For many decades corrosion resistant Copper Alloys have been utilized in sea water applications for their unique combination of properties anti-biofouling non-sparking resistance to cavitation corrosion excellent wear properties and low magnetic permeability.One disadvantage has been lack of mechanical strength and Copper Nickel Chromium (CuNi30Cr2) is a unique alloy developed to overcome this. It does not rely on a precipitation hardening mechanism for increasing the mechanical properties but “spinodal” decomposition which is a chemical strengthening mechanism. Additionally the alloy is single phase and hence it does not suffer from selective phase corrosion which has been problematic with some copper based alloys in marine salt water environments.This paper evaluates the wrought version of CuNi30Cr2 which can now be manufactured to Def Stan 02-886 and offers significant scope for design engineers with much higher mechanical properties increased toughness and increased internal integrity. It provides the findings of a four year corrosion program with comparisons against 26 other alloys involving a range of copper alloys Monel® Inconel® Super Duplex Titanium and Stainless Steels. General corrosion galvanic and crevice corrosion in a sea water environment were all examined as well as mechanical properties.
A newly developed two-component zero VOC water based epoxy topcoat, based on a solid epoxy resin dispersion cured with modified amine, offers comparable performance to solvent based and high VOC water based epoxies and exhibits good corrosion and chemical resistance. The performance properties of the new innovative zero VOC water based epoxy topcoat are reviewed and compared to solvent based and high VOC water based epoxies used in industrial maintenance applications.
There exists a need for environmentally benign coatings to eliminate cadmium and/or chromate coatings on high-strength fasteners. These alternative replacement coatings would provide high-strength, corrosion resistant fasteners for use in weapon systems.
Various types of zinc-rich coatings are available for corrosion protection. The challenges associated with the proper specification and application of zinc-rich coatings are briefly discussed. The paper then focuses on data from various studies, which quantify the corrosion protection benefits of various types of zinc-rich coatings.
The increasing need for fossil fuels has resulted in more aggressive drilling and exploitation in oil and gas production industry. As new explorations at more extreme conditions (i.e. high temperature and high pressure) become more frequent, new challenges arise in terms of drilling equipment, operation conditions and safe production. Among those challenges, the mineral scale deposition, as one of the serious problems both for the surface and subsurface oilfields, can cause pipelines plugging, equipment failure and decrease in production efficiency, even emergency shutdown.
