Inhibition of corrosion is one of the biggest concerns in the automotive industry in order to improve the quality and the durability of the products. Recently high alloyed ferritic and austentic stainless steels have been widely used as materials for automotive exhaust systems. Among all parts of the exhaust system mufflers are known to have one of the shortest life time due to the severe corrosive attack both from outside and inside. Internal corrosion could be enhanced by the condensate which is generated by the combustion gas from the engine. In this study the impact of synthetic condensate on the different grades of steels was examined by electrochemical measurements. In addition modified immersion tests were carried out to address the aggressiveness of condensate in crevice. As the muffler is exposed to temperatures up to 500°C the influence of the temperature was also investigated. In conclusion the corrosive species in condensates and their effect on corrosion of stainless steels will be discussed.
