Typical service lifetimes for protective coating systems range from 10-50 years, depending on how extreme the service environment is, as well as on all the details of substrate preparation, coating composition, and coating application.4 While the primary consideration for specifiers of protective coating systems is the service life related to corrosion protection, there is often also a requirement of durability of decorative properties, e.g. color and gloss. This is true not only for monumental steel structures, but also for instance for industrial and offshore structures where “safety colors” are used. This segment therefore has many similarities to the “architectural coatings” segment (coatings for monumental buildings), where the substrates may be different, but where a multi-layer system approach is still used, and owners expect the durability of both the protective and decorative functions.

Potash is mined from deep underground deposits left by ancient inland seas or extracted from saltwater bodies. The typical composition of potash is 40% potassium chloride (KCl), 55% sodium chloride (NaCl) and 5% clay. About 95% of potash is used for fertilizer in agriculture; the remaining 5% is used in commercial and industrial products such as soap, water softeners, de-icers, drilling muds etc.
Hardness and corrosion resistance of electroplated nanocomposite coatings are reported here in light of process parameters such as current density, boron addition and diamond nanoparticles. A boron source that enables greater incorporation of B in the coating was used.
In contrast to the Hipster projected or “posed” image based solely upon appearance in lieu of substance, a company’s brand-image projected by paints & coatings requires performance derived from consistently sound chemistry and manufacturing. The protective paints and coatings on the façade of commercial buildings are a significant aspect of the image associated with the owner organization.
While traditional cleaning solutions can be time consuming, costly and ineffective, dry ice blast cleaning provides a completely dry solution that cleans faster and more efficiently, while reducing downtime and supporting environmental initiatives. This presentation will discuss the basic concepts of dry ice cleaning. Participants will learn the benefits of the process, as well as, how it can benefit their production, improve quality, and support an environmentally responsible production environment.
Synthesize and formulate non-isocyanate glycidyl carbamate (GC) coatings for fouling-release marine applications.
Pipeline under, solids deposition deposit corrosion (UDC) is a localized corrosion phenomenon that develops beneath or around solid deposits, which settle at the bottom of low flow/intermittent flow pipelines. These deposits are complex mixtures of water, organic, inorganic, and biological materials, and their composition can vary significantly depending on the properties of the product being transported and the operating conditions in the pipeline.
As VOC regulations continue to drive coatings development, waterborne alkyds are progressively being utilized further due to their attractive environmental profile. Advancements in waterborne alkyd chemistry have provided the first waterborne biobased resin for pavement marking coatings. Through strategic selection of alkyd monomers and the appropriate balance of the emulsification aids, a shear stable alkyd latex resin that shows exceptional performance in waterborne traffic marking formulas has been developed.
Calcium carbonate precipitation in the presence of pollutants is a carrier of importance for their transport to the sediments and for their subsequent release depending on the local microenvironment conditions. Zinc is often present in industrial waters (heat exchangers and boilers) mainly for corrosion protection. Depending on the alkalinity and calcium concentration of waters used in water intensive processes, calcium carbonate fouling is common. Moreover, among other metals, is present in natural waters together with iron and copper, where the concentration of Zn(II) may reach at levels of several ppm.
With the rapid development of the economy and acceleration of urban modernization, many high-speed railways and buried pipelines have been built in China. Due to the limitation of space or geographical location, high-speed railways are often constructed in parallel or crossing with long-distance pipelines in some locations. The interference of high-speed railways on pipelines is the result of inductive and conductive coupling, which brings about AC corrosion and other safety issues.
The annual natural gas demand in the United States surpassed 31 trillion cubic feet in 2019. This is over a 500% increase from demand in the 1950’s (5.7 trillion cubic feet) [1]. As gas demand continues to rise, pipeline operators have limited options to meet demand requirements. Pressure uprating is one option that can be leveraged for certain pipelines to meet the increased demand economically.
