This paper gives an update on the latest developments of the new generation of waterborne Polyurethane Topcoats (PU topcoats) for flooring which were presented during the annual SSPC meeting October 2003. Topcoats are commonly used in the construction industry over functional floor coatings or as sealers for concrete. For many years solvent-borne polyurethane topcoats are the standard for flooring due to very good properties, mechanical and chemical, and application ease-of-use. However, the significant amounts of solvent act as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and change in the VOC regulation make it more complicated to apply these topcoats. As shown in the previous presentation, high-solids, solvent-free or 1st generation waterborne topcoats lack in application characteristics or in performance, especially chemical resistance. Over the past 5 years, the 2nd generation of waterborne PU Topcoat resins were developed. The new coating raw materials —hydroxyfunctional polyols and isocyanates- have in common a very low cosolvent content, < 1% b.w., and the application ease-of-use. The different resins allow the formulator to make flat to glossy topcoats with a wide range of mechanical and chemical properties. This presentation is focused on the glossy high chemical resistant waterborne PU topcoats
