Challenges in Providing Effective Internal Corrosion Protection for Aboveground Storage Tanks

Internal corrosion is an important consideration for metallic structures that contain or may contain conductive electrolytes. As internal corrosion can affect a variety of structure types it is influenced by a myriad of factors including but not limited to types of materials present electrolyte chemistry temperature presence of coatings and process flow characteristics. More specifically past and recent experience has shown that materials selection in many storage/process tanks has caused internal corrosion issues or negatively impacted the effectiveness of the designed cathodic protection system. These issues have reduced the effectiveness of post construction corrosion mitigation options. Specific examples from the waste water treatment and oil and gas industries will be discussed and suggestions made for materials selection improvements to aid in internal corrosion prevention. It is imperative that the tank designer and corrosion professional work together to mitigate possible corrosion issues during the design stage.
