Crude feed often contains contaminants / heavy amounts of sulfur compounds that may degrade equipment or even the finished product. These sulfur and nitrogen compounds react with hydrogen to form hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) within certain units and can lead to formation of ammonium bisulfide salts (NH4HS) when cooled. NH4HS salts may lead to plugging, and if wet, rapid under deposit corrosion can occur. Hence, water washing ahead of NH4HS salt formation is essential to prevent wet salt corrosion and ensure safe unit operations.

The purpose of this work is to develop a predictive coating condition model that processes continuous coating condition measurements to characterize changes in coating protection in atmospheric laboratory and outdoor environments. Zero resistance ammeter measurements across an interdigitated electrode composed of two different aerospace materials were used to monitor the inhibitive ability of a scribed coating and detect loss of inhibitor protection. Results will be presented that demonstrate the ability of a stochastic model to detect loss of inhibitor protection and predict coating failure in comparison to observational results. A description of the samples, electrochemical measurements, and test environments will be reported along with the approach used to extract parameters to model and predict coating performance.

In this laboratory work, zero resistance ammeter measurements were used to collect galvanic corrosion measurements for scribed organic coating samples and e-coated samples in situ. For this work, a new sample design was derived from samples currently used in the automotive industry consisting of a base plate and a cover plate of another material to form a galvanic couple with a crevice between them. The samples were connected to a developmental test system that uses zero resistance ammeter (ZRA) measurements to collect galvanic corrosion rates for multiple samples in situ. E-coated samples were evaluated in accelerated corrosion tests for comparison with traditional organic coatings. A description of the samples, electrochemical measurement device, and methods for coating testing will be reported along with the analysis of the resulting data and its implications for evaluating various coating types.

Industrial usage of Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) has grown consistently in recent years, thanks to the improved characteristics imparted to the oxide film in terms of surface adhesion, hardness, crystallinity, uniformity, and corrosion resistance. The metallic substrate is not subjected to elevated temperature and the overall equipment complexity is relatively simple, making the technique a good candidate for surface functionalization. In PEO treatments, high voltages are employed (~ 150-750 V 1) allowing for the formation of an insulating, or at least semiconductive, oxide layer that’s limits ion transport responsible for the initial coating growth. Beyond the spark voltage (prerequisite the enter the PEO regime) oxidation does not occur only as the result of a continuous flow of ions but rather it takes place after the cooling of a plasma discharge.

This presentation and accompanying research summary demonstrate hot-dip galvanized (HDG) rebar’s performance protecting reinforced concrete structures and highlight technical research confirming its chloride durability in concrete via a study conducted by the Galvanizers Association of Australia (GAA). The resulting study also produced a model for determining chloride penetration in concrete and concludes that reduced concrete cover can be considered in structures that use HDG rebar, which has a substantial impact on sustainability (raw material usage and length of service). Along with this new research on chloride durability modeling, a review of recent case studies, inspections and installations confirms its longevity and growing popularity amongst specifiers to provide long term corrosion resistance in concrete.

The manuscript proposes an advanced study of the corrosion resistance of anodic layers obtained by anodizing different Aluminum/Silicon (AlSi) alloys, typically used in the manufacturing of braking systems. Metallography, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) measurements and electrochemical noise (EN) -based methods allow to depict the complex interplay between the microstructure of each investigated alloy and their corrosion resistance after anodizing. It is demonstrated that a high Silicon concentration in pristine alloys can: a) modulate the impedance of the obtained anodic layers; and b) generate local thickness variations of the coatings with an associated reduction of the corrosion resistance. In addition, electrochemical noise measurements (ENM) demonstrate that the corrosion resistance and anodizability of the proposed materials follow the order EN AW-6082 > EN AC-42200 > EN AC-43200.
