Advances in Fluoropolymer Resins for Long-Life Coatings

Fluoroethylene-vinyl ether (FEVE) resins were developed in the early 1980’s. These thermoset solution fluoropolymer resins are used to make highly durable, weatherable, and corrosion resistant air-dry coatings. Applications are found in architectural, industrial, automotive, and aerospace markets, and in infrastructure coatings for bridges, oil rigs, and water towers.

Applications are found in architectural, industrial, automotive, and aerospace markets, and in infrastructure coatings for bridges, oil rigs, and water towers. This paper will discuss recent developments in FEVE resins, aimed at producing coatings that offer the same outstanding properties while meeting more stringent environmental standards. Recent test results giving an indication of the potential life cycle cost savings of FEVE based coatings will be shown. A number of structures coated in the 1980’s will be discussed. Finally, several more recent applications for FEVE resin based coatings will also be reviewed.
