Telluric currents produced during geomagnetic disturbances have long been know to cause variations in pipe-to-soil potentials (PSP) on pipelines. These are increasingly being taken into account in the design of cathodic protection for new pipelines. To aid in this use a “Telluric Simulator” has been developed that facilitates the calculation of PSP produced by telluric currents. This paper describes the development of the Telluric Simulator including i) the use of geomagnetic data to calculate the electric fields and ii) the use of those electric fields to a pipeline model to calculate PSP. It will be shown how to specify the details of a pipeline including branches and other features. Descriptions will be provided of features of the Telluric Simulator that allow modelling of the pipeline response to specified electric fields or for past geomagnetic disturbances. These features allow pipeline designs to be tested under realistic conditions and modifications to the design to be tested.
