A High Performance Thermal Insulative Coating For Personnel Protection

In industrial plants such as oil & gas and chemical plants, the plant piping is covered with insulative materials such as mineral wools and metal cladding for thermal insulation. The piping under insulation is subject to more severe corrosive environment than that exposed to the outdoor, due to rainwater entering through the cladding joints and condensation caused by temperature fluctuation. In addition, since the piping is covered with the insulation materials, it is impossible to identify the corrosion from the outside, increasing the risk of leakage accidents due to delays in corrosion mitigations.

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) of piping has been a problem for many years in oil and gas plants. Protective coatings have been considered the main countermeasure against CUI but CUI measures should also include thermal insulation materials. In recent years, insulative coating has been proposed as an approach for CUI mitigation. Insulating coating is expected as a material suitable for CUI prevention because it can suppress the formation of water layer by firmly adhering to the piping surface. However, conventional insulative coatings are difficult to achieve thermal insulation in one layer and require multiple coatings to reach a level where it can prevent burns and have yet to replace conventional insulative materials and mesh guards. This paper will detail the newly developed insulative coating that forms a thick film coating which results in superior thermal insulation. This insulative coating has a low thermal conductivity of 0.03 W/m K and can form a thick film of 2 mm per application, so the excellent thermal insulation performance can be utilized for personnel protection.
