The effectiveness of cathodic protection on the exterior bottoms of aboveground grade storage tanks is usually measured with zinc or copper-copper sulfate reference electrodes placed under the tank bottom. In the case of asphalt tanks, however, the high temperature of about 300F (150C) under the tanks precludes the use of these types of electrodes. In such instances, corrosion measurement probes maybe
substituted. Zero corrosion rates as measured on the probes should indicate effective cathodic protection. This paper describes the installation and initial testing of comosion measurements probes under two asphalt tanks in a refinery Keywords: aboveground storage tanks, asphalt tanks, cathodic protection, corrosion monitoring coupons, corrosion monitoring probes, high temperature cathodic protection monitoring, reference electrodes
