A Corrosion Control Plan was implemented for a fully regenerative catalytic reformer unit. The plan was comprehensive and integrated by incorporating aspects of corrosion engineering, process engineering, and inspection and pressure equipment. A Corrosion and Materials Diagram (C&MD) was developed for the operating unit to define the various corrosion loops, materials of construction, specification breaks, and potential damage mechanisms. Using the C&MD as a reference, a Corrosion Control Document (CCD) was written that identifies the exact location of all potential corrosion mechanisms. Once the materials and corrosion information related to this operating unit was captured and recorded in the C&MD and the CCD, the information was utilized to run a Risk Based Inspection program which risk ranked all pressure
equipment and process piping. Inspection Strategies and specific
inspection plans were selected for all pressure equipment and piping based on criticality and specific corrosion mechanisms. Management of process change variables (Key variables) related to corrosion and materials degradation were also specified and incorporated into the unit control system.
