This paper describes the history and use of protective coatings applied to the internal shell and roofs of aboveground storage tanks in the petroleum and petrochemical industry. Such linings are employed to
prevent corrosion, to protect product quality, to lessen product evaporative losses and to reduce tank roof seal wear. Described are corrosion mechanisms, corrosion rates as well as the development of inorganic and organic linings for hydrocarbon storage tanks. Advantages and disadvantages of such linings are included. Not discussed in this paper are linings for the floors of aboveground storage tanks which have been covered elsewhere.
