The Federal Highway Administration and the State Departments of Transportation continue to search for materials and methods that improve the durability of the infrastructure. In the area of bndge coatings, industry has made significant improvements over the past several years. Coatings are now available which provide excellent durability and minimal environmental impact. Thermal sprayed metal coatings (metallizing) is receiving considerable attention by bridge engineers of late due to its promise of extended corrosion resistance and reduced costs associated with newly available application equipment. The subject paper outlines FHWA’s recent experience in research, testing, and implementation of metahized coatings for steel bridge structures. Keywords: metallizing, steel bridges, life-cycle cost, corrosion, productivity
