During the past 20 years, there have been many improvements in the technology utilized to chemically clean industrial equipment. New corrosion inhibitors, organic acids and chelant solvents have been developed. Improved techniques for removing refinery/chemical plant deposits also have been produced. Most importantly, there have been significant improvements to our understanding of the chemical mechanisms underlying many of these processes. This paper will review important technology areas where there have been new developments that have impacted the commercial use of chemicals to clean large industrial equipment.
