Chemically cleaning nuclear steam generators have become a commercially viable alternative to replacing these components or decommissioning an entire plant. A concern when considering chemical cleaning or any kind of chemical treatment is the allowable corrosion for treated components.The goals of a chemical cleaning are two-fold: removing deposit and keeping corrosion at a minimum through out the application. Each of these chemical cleanings are unique in nature with regard to reasons and objectives for cleaning, corrosion allowances, deposit characteristics, and system designs. Variations in process applications and corrosion monitoring strategies allowed for successful chemical cleanings.The various process scenarios included modified low temperature iron and copper dissolution steps, commercially and proprietary passivation steps, crevice cleaning steps, elevated iron dissolution steps, and a proprietary high temperature chemical cleaning process.
