Type 304 stainless steel (UNS S30400) pipe has been used successfully in the water distribution systems of four commercial buildings in a long term test in Japan. Water conditions were 50°C maximum, 20 ppm chloride, and less than 1ppm residual chlorine. Piping and a variety of connection mechanisms were evaluated after one, three, five and ten years. All of the stainless steel pipe was free of corrosion. No corrosion occurred on any of the welded joints, soldered joints or pressed fittings. The comprehension joints exhibited localized attack of the cast bronze components. Lap joints suffered crevice corrosion.
