Current FRP technology limits the use of composite piping systems to mild solvents and low concentrations (below 75%) of sulfuric acid. Many typical plant environments contain strong organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloroethane, and methylene chloride, as well as acids such as sulfuric and hydrochloric. Also, many waste streams contain combinations of both acids and solvents. Currently, plants must specify lined steel or high alloy metallic piping systems for these applications. It is the purpose of this paper to show that new thermosetting resin technology and liner materials have shown excellent corrosion resistance to concentrated organic solvents and sulfuric acid at up to 98%, with operating temperatures up to 275°F(135°C).
