In the Canadian Forces, as for other aircraft operators, the need has arisen to utilize new tools for managing corrosion problems more cost effectively. In this context, the role of aircraft corrosion sensors and the current state of this technological field was reviewed, together with identifying firture development work. Three separate aircratl corrosion surveillance application areas have been defined, as a basis for evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of various corrosion sensor technologies. At present, the biggest technical shortcomings exist for the important task of reducing unnecessary inspections. The development of “smart” sensors integrated into the aircraft structure is recommended for this requirement.
