Crevice corrosion testing requires an appreciation of many interrelated factors. Two case histories are presented to demonstrate the effects of certain test variables on material periiormance. One of our investigations, for munple, recreated conditions reported by other researchers and demonstrated that attack on a stainless steel propeller shafl could also have occurred by crevice corrosion alone rather than exclusively by stray current. The second case deals with the interpretation of test results from several studies in natural and synthetic seawater environments and seawater treated to mitigate biofilm formation.
