The selection of optimum materials of construction for the processing and handling of corrosive chemicals is facilitated with the use of a patented liner leak detection system developed for thermoplastic lined fiberglass composite fabricated equipment. The built-in system takes advantage of the electrically insulating nature of the thermoplastic primary corrosion barrier. An electrically conductive carbon based veil is laminated directly behind the thermoplastic. Electrodes are then inerted in strategic positions in direct contact with the conductive layer. These constitute the “dry electrodes”. A wet electrode, in contact with the vessel’s content via a nozzle connection, alloys for conductivity readings that determine the electrical insulating properties of the thermoplastic corrosion barrier. In the event of thermoplastic damage, a positive conductivity measurement can be detected and action taken to repair the corrosion barrier before the chemicals attack the fiberglass structure. Positioning of the dry electrodes can provide means for localizing the leak, hence reducing the duration and cost of maintenance shut-down. The system allows inspection to be carried-out without the need for a shut-down or expensive vessel entry. A description of the system is outlined with examples of application and case histories.
