Ti-5Al-4V-0.6Mo-0.4Fe (Ti-54M)1 is a newly developed alloy with better machinability than most commonly used Ti-6Al-4V alloy. It was developed to improve upon the overall production costs of Ti-6Al-4V while providing similar mechanical properties. Halide ions are stress corrosion cracking (SCC) agents for Ti-6Al-4V alloy in aqueous solutions; also Ti-6Al-4V has moderate sensitivity to hydrogen damage. Currently, there is no corrosion data for this newly introduced Ti-54M alloy, both for general or Environmental Assisted Cracking (EAC) in aqueous solutions. In this study, the general corrosion behavior in various media and EAC behavior (SCC and hydrogen susceptibility) in seawater at ambient conditions are presented for Ti-54M and discussed with reference to the well established Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Keywords: titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-54M, corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
