10264 Subcritical Carbonitriding for Stainless Steels

Nitriding and carbonitriding improve the wear resistance of stainless steels. A summary of historical public literature including physical and mechanical property data and corrosion resistance is presented. Corrosion enhancement with nitriding some stainless steels below the nitride formation temperature is presented.

Nitriding and carbonitriding have been demonstrated to improve the wear resistance of stainless steels. The process relies on a thermochemical treatment involving the diffusion of nitrogen and/or carbon into the surface of the component resulting in a high hardness. Additional beneficial aspects of this process are achieved when temperatures below the carbide and nitride formation temperatures are used with respect to corrosion resistance. This paper provides the summary of historical public literature including physical and mechanical property data and corrosion resistance. Previously unpublished data on carbonitrided stainless steels including Super 13 Cr stainless steel are presented. A discussion of the corrosion enhancement that is possible with nitriding some stainless steels below the nitride formation temperature is presented.
