The product of coal gasification is syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon
monoxide, in which the selected materials may operate. Understanding alloys
performance in CO-rich atmospheres is important toward the development of coal
gasification systems. This paper describes the corrosion behavior of Alloy 242 and Alloy
230 after exposure to a CO-rich atmosphere at 750°C. Chemical composition of the
gaseous environment was determined by gas chromatography (GC). The surfaces of the
corroded samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped
with microchemical analytical capabilities. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was also
used in this research.
