CORROSION 2007 Paper Number 7450 presented a step by step failure analysis methodology as applied to the
principal mechanisms by which boiler tubes fail during service, including four case histories illustrating the
methodology. A very brief summary of the failure analysis methodology is reiterated in this paper. Because of
the broad industry interest in boiler tube failures and the large data base of failure analyses conducted for power
generation clients, additional detailed case histories have been selected for presentation in this paper. Among the
case histories presented here are corrosion fatigue, creep fatigue, O.D. tube erosion, hydrogen damage, and a
major case in life expectancy determination.
