This paper provides some brief U.S. statistics on current water consumption and reuse, before broadly reviewing
the potential for reusing various industrial water sources in cooling systems; and potential corrosion, scaling and
fouling problems that may be caused by pollutants, such as oil, ammonia and iron, high levels of chlorides,
calcium, silica, etc. Additionally, this paper reviews some engineered pretreatment technologies before focusing
on the selection and application of modern specialty inhibitor chemistries, designed to ensure clean waterside
conditions and maintenance of efficient heat-transfer surfaces.
