Although radiography has been in use first in medicine beginning in 1895 and decades later in industrial applications, the techniques employed have changed little until the recent development of solid-state equipment, primarily durable, mobile computers and solid-state image capturing devices. These advances are now being incorporated into the field of industrial radiography, thereby providing significant gains in its usefulness and capability. This paper describes the development of radiography, presents examples of its usefulness in the inspection of piping systems, and finally discusses how the integration of computers and solid-state imaging systems have increased the power of radiography in this work.
