Due to restriction in VOC emissions Hydro Oil and Energy launched a project of testing and evaluation of waterborne coatings. Samples with several systems were prepared and exposed on an offshore platform in the North Sea. Some of the systems were also used in a maintenance situation on a coastal oil terminal with very similar climate conditions as offshore. The systems were either fully waterborne systems or so-called hybrid systems, i.e., one of the coating layers was solvent based while the other layer(s) were waterborne. The systems were exposed for 3 - 6 years and inspected with regular intervals. The paint manufactures have also run accelerated laboratory qualification testing according to the NORSOK M-501 (ISO 20340) requirements of some of the systems. Selected systems showed promising results and are clearly candidates for offshore maintenance or new projects. The practicalities of using these systems either for offshore maintenance or use at construction sites are also discussed.
