Earth gradient measurements were used to assess the need to re-insulate the embedded
track of an electric light rail where the light rail crosses a buried water supply conduit.
The rail was found to have significant stray current corrosion and re-insulating the track
was shown to be an effective corrosion control measure. During retrofit of the track, a
coupon test station was installed on the pipe; the coupon test station enabled better
assessment of the pipe than was possible with only earth gradient measurements.
