Twenty-year old concrete lined carbon steel cooling tower water piping had deteriorated both
externally and internally. The pipe diameter ranged from 24 inches to 36 inches; most of the pipe being
36 inches in diameter. Fiberglass reinforced plastic piping was the obvious material of choice to resist
both external and internal corrosive environments. This paper describes the rather unusual installation
of over 500-feet of large diameter FRP piping, which was installed during a thirteen-day shutdown at
reduced installation costs. Some key learning items will be discussed that may be of interest to both
FRP veterans and novices.
