The Ormen Lange production facilities consist of subsea production units with multiphase pipelines carrying gas and condensate to an onshore processing plant. At the onshore plant there are four storage tanks for intermediate storage of MEG/water fluids, which are regenerated and returned offshore. The tanks are either fully or partially coated due to the risk of unacceptable corrosion attack during the 30 years lifetime of the onshore processing plant. The purpose of the present study was to qualify coating systems for the rich MEG/water conditions. The composition is 79% MEG and 21% water with minor concentration of various salt ions (chloride, acetate, etc.). The liquid is in equilibrium with CO2 and the operating temperature is 80°C. In addition, there is carry over of condensate giving a three-phase mixture in the storage tanks. Five different tank coating systems were tested at 100°C using the set-up outlined in NACE TM01741. After 52 weeks exposure, only one system remained intact. The other systems showed blistering or other types of defects. Some systems failed after rather short time of testing. NACE TM-0174 is a suitable method for testing coating systems under complex chemical conditions.
