Changes to crude unit operation (operational parameters, crude slate, design, etc.) can have an impact on existing overhead corrosion control mitigation strategies. Overhead simulation computer programs can play a key role in identifying the impacts of these changes on the corrosion potential of the overhead circuit. These programs can also be used to proactively define some of the changes that may be required to maintain unit reliability.

The key to getting the maximum benefit that can be provided by using overhead simulation computer programs is the understanding of their limitations and use guidelines. This paper will outline some of the key guidelines and limitations of an overhead simulation-modeling program. Some of the items that will be discussed will be data quality, sampling techniques, and interpretation of results with respect to actual field experience. Examples of simulation-model use in two actual field applications will be reviewed.

Key Words: ionic equilibria models, chloride salt prediction, computer simulation programs
