Initiation of local corrosion of stainless steels UNS S 30400 and UNS S 31603 by dissolving sodium chloride under heat transfer conditions has been studied by means of ferroxyl-test and electrochemical noise measurements. Both methods clearly show, that under the conditions of dissolving salt at high wall temperature local corrosion is initiated whereas the conditions of the bulk solution are not critical yet.
