A review of cathodic disbondment test (CDT) methods from standard organizations such as ASTM, ISO, CSA, NF and AS is presented in this paper. Factors affecting CDT such as substrate and electrolyte temperature, anode configuration, anolyte isolation, electrolyte composition, voltage gradients and methods of heating are examined. These factors can significantly affect the rate of disbondment, the mechanism of failure and the relationship to field performance. The information provided is applicable to selecting appropriate methods for product specification and realistic interpretation of data for evaluating coating performance.

Keywords: cathodic disbondment, coatings, buried pipeline
