Fiberglass composites designed for chemical process equipment are generally engineered with a corrosion barrier and a structural layer that will vary in thickness based on its intended use. This paper will focus only on the corrosion barrier, sometimes referred to as a liner, and its various types and intended uses. Three typical types of liner functionality will be covered: 1.chemical resistance 2.electrical conductivity 3.abrasion resistance Without addressing these requirements, optimization of the service life of FRP equipment will not be achieved. Furthermore, neglecting liner considerations could result in a considerable reduction in the structural integrity of the part, similar to under engineering the composite. Corrosion liner considerations are therefore very important in the design and construction of FRP equipment.
