We used Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) to examine the corrosion properties of mild carbon steel in the presence of the iron-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis and the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. We also tested the sensitivity of EIS to see if this technique could distinguish between different ratios of mixed cultures. We find that while Bode plots and Rp values generated from EIS data are distinct for each species, this data could not differentiate between pure D. desulfuricans cultures and mixed cultures. Ecorr values, however, could distinguish between different inoculums of D. desulfuricans.
