A phenomenon that regularly plagues the standard austenitic stainless steels of type AISI 304/316 is stress-corrosion cracking (SCC). This paper discusses various cases of SCC and Stress Induced Cracking(SIC) that normally occur with austenitic stainless steel in fertilizer plants and describes three case studies. Chloride contamination (attack) is the main reason of SCC in different media such as steam, DM water and insulation (atmospheric corrosion). Guidelines of this paper may be useful for solving chloride - induced cracking and stress induced cracking in fertilizer plant.
