Austenitic stainless steels can become susceptible to intergranular corrosion due to inappropriate heat treatments. Therefore the potentiostatic Electrochemical Reactivation Test (ERT) has been developed at the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy of Aachen University. This electrochemical test method is fast, non-destructive and quantitative. The test measures the current after reactivation associated with the corrosion of chromium depleted regions. The ERT was carried out on stabilised and not stabilised austenitic steel grades in various heat treatment conditions. The test procedures and the results of the test will be presented in this study and compared to results from conventional tests like Strauss test and EPR: test. A limit value to characterise the degree of sensitisation is estimated.
